With the number of dementia diagnoses growing annually, Lumina by Landis meets a very specific and urgent need for authentic connection, with a positive approach and compassionate care. Lumina offers unique solutions that support autonomy and honor dignity.

A Journey of Courage and Endurance

Jay Martin presented the Memory Loss Quilt wall hanging to Pastoral Services in honor of his wife Ruth Eleanor Hartzler Martin who passed away from Alzheimer’s Dementia on June 16, 2023. The wall hanging, displayed in the lobby of West Bethany Chapel, represents the progression of memory loss and the changes in the brain of a person with some form of dementia. The top left block represents a healthy brain with the memory intact. As you progress to the other quilt blocks, the change in the quilt pattern is a visual symbol of the decreased processing in the brain. Our loved ones remain precious to us all through this journey and continue to have many abilities even with this diagnosis. 

Ruth Martin worked as a nurse for 50+ years in various leadership roles. Her last employment was at Landis Homes as a part-time evening/night relief Nursing Supervisor.

Bringing Light, Together

Training & education, one-on-one consultation, and meaningful engagement will come together in the Dementia Center to bring light to those on the journey of a dementia diagnosis. Through Lumina by Landis, and the Dementia Center on the Landis Homes campus, our team will utilize a variety of resources, including technology, to help meet the ever-growing needs of those with dementia and their loved ones.

The following funding needs have been identified:

Training & Education

For required internal training of all team members, enhanced training and certifications for personal and health care staff as well as conducting PAC workshops outside of Landis Communities. Possible other focus areas for education include spirituality and dementia programs and a care partner support series.

One-on-One Consultation

Utilize online, digital and in-person platforms to develop a spectrum of consultation offering for care partners and families.

Technology

Procure equipment and utilize annual subscriptions to implement technology that will improve resident safety, encourage autonomy and integrate cognitive stimulation tools.

Dementia Center

Construct and furnish the Dementia Center in the Landis Homes Eden East location. The space will include a large multi-purpose room with kitchen, a family conference room, an art studio, a patio and garden and team member offices.

Meaningful Engagement and “For the Moment” Experiences

Once the Dementia Center is constructed, funds will be needed to equip the Center with resources required to provide music and art therapy, kitchen appliances and utensils utilized during “For the Moment” experiences.

A Space for the Moment

One of the key innovations of Lumina by Landis will be a new Dementia Center. We will transform this existing space at Landis Homes into a place for consultation, education, and connection. Construction begins in 2026, and our grand opening will be in 2027! Bursting with natural light, a gentle color palette, and soothing design elements, the Dementia Center will be inviting to individuals with dementia. Those with dementia and their care partners will partake in connective experiences designed to facilitate joy and purposeful engagement, such as movement, music, art and baking.
